I don't think any of the top services do repair work. There are people that can but it's very costly. More than the value of the coin.

Yes, Bill; he is, and if you compare how he spoke to you to how you did him, you'll see only one side went a little too far.

That said, I don't doubt your heart was in the right place, but the advice given was, in fact, poor. You can say it was only meant as an option, but isn't how it was worded. It's one thing to suggest ANACS a lower cost alternative, but something altogether different to say things like "definitely" and the "investment is well worth it".

Thanks everyone for your input. I might just hang on to it for now and hopefully I find a better
    Grade 1921 peace dollar soon.

I need to know how to tell if a Morgan Dollar 1896 is a proof or has been whizzed.
The coin in question does not show any marks indicating scrubbing in the fields.
Lustre is good and details on Obverse and Reverse are crisp. The coin appears to be
Shinny on the devices, but shows the stars an lettering to be shiny as well. any thoughts?
Note: still trying to find a camera to upload pictures, lol.

1896 was a good year for Morgan Proofs. Images courtesy of Heritage:

Even the lesser ones would not show "shiny" on the devices. Almost certainly a polished coin.
