I got my first ancient coin (a denarius of Marcus Aurelius as Caesar) in 2001, when I was 33 (so many wasted years ) ATB, Aidan.
If I knew today who would cherish a few of my favorites in fifty years, I'd be inclined to give them to them now and cut out the drama. I recently bought some coins I believe to be very special that the seller did not even see fit to list as separate lots or describe properly. If I had not bought them, I suppose some would have gone into the coin mill where some might have ended up in jewelry because they were not the current flavor of the month. My great regret is not having a child who wants my coins. Many would take them for free but that would be for resale not appreciation..
Get in line. i believe @ValiantKnight or @red_spork (if my memory serves me correct) might have dibs on being adopted by @dougsmit , followed by me. If there are any left-overs you can have them.
I just started ancients at 51. I started collecting in general around 6 or so. I sort of stopped and haven't done much since 2006. I just left things sit and collect dust until recently.
Lets see, started collecting US and world at about 12 years old. Started collecting ancients at about 28 years old. This was around 1984, and i've been hooked every sense. ~Doug
I think I am tied with TIF at 49. I collected stamps as a young kid and then gave that up to finance dropping a small block V8 into what I recall was a Ford Pinto. You can imagine the results - motor too big to fit under the hood? No problem - Pinto with a hood scoop. Unfortunately so much torque when you stepped on the gas it tended to pull you into the ditch unless you had a literal death grip on the wheel. Combined with the optional sticking accelerator and exploding gas tank it was quite the car. I got into coins recovering from a surgery and surfing the internet. Like many I always assumed that ancient coins would be too expensive (and some are) but there are so many nice affordable coins there is no shortage of things to acquire and study. I have always been into history and this is a great way to get closer to it.
1985, I was 16 years old. I was collecting pocket change before that of course, but who knows when that all started?
My interest started with these 1969 BP jetons / replica ancients at age 14 , I got them from my family members , untill now I only managed to buy the Original Tetradrachma's of Athens/owl and the Ptolemy Soter I coins. The rest is sadly out of my budget range. The jetons with the estimate price of an Original coin above:
Andres, what nice present for a 14 year old boy! and what a nice way to get started. I am sure you must have been very happy with that present. My story is similar to yours - I must have been around 8 - 10 or so and my mother gifted me two denarii, one of Caracalla and one of Julia Domna which she had bought at a museum in England. That got me started.
Eduard, these were free tokens/jetons , everybody who filled up their car with a minumum of 5 gallons of gas, received one free coin, the green holder card was for sale for a dime US. Often wondered if these BP tokens were avaible in Germany at that time (1969) ? Later found out these 3 sets were issued by BP in France between 1969 - 1971
