i have recently purchased a coin on ebay .it was advertised as a 1921 high relief peace dollar that is not certified,so it is an e bayers opinion. the question i have is it possible to be a high relief once it has been worn to a circulated grade. it almost stops being high relief. how can you tell if it once was high? are there any die diagnostics of attributes to identify it? any opinion as to grade ? thanks for the help guys
I am not very good at telling if a coin is counterfeit, but I can see by the date that this was indeed a high relief Peace. You can tell because the curls of the tops of the 9 and 2 curl in so much, as opposed to this 1922 for example.
thanks for telling me i never realized that all 1921 peace dollars are high relief. thats what i love about cointalk i learn something new every time. by the way i bought it as part of a group of coins but it was advertised as a vf ,any thoughts
I want to say F-15 but it could be Very Fine. I'm one of the tougher graders around here. If you didn't pay more than $75 for it then I think you did well. 1921 Peace dollars have been bringing big bucks on Ebay and if you were to turn around and sell it I am confident it would bring at least $75!
coinnut 1921 was the first year of issue, as you know. The 1922 (and on) were lowered in relief to make the minting of the design easier. That said, the 1921 is my favorite, especially since I can't afford the Ultra High relief 1907 double eagle.
The trick is to find a 1922 high relief dollar. There are a few proofs, and one business strike known. The key to identifying it? The high relief 1922 busines stike was made from the same obv hub as the 21 high relief. Look at the spike that touches the right side of the E in LIBERTY on the 21 and 22 shown earlier in the thread. Once you know what you're looking for it is an arms length variety.
