Hello, I have been getting very useful feedback from you regarding the coins in my collection. Specially on how to assign them a grade. Here is a 1 dollar coin from 1795, of the Flowing Hair type. It is in quite good condition, but i believe it may have been cleaned. The surfaces are nice, not scratched, and quite smooth however. I would appreciate it you would give me your opinions as to grade, and possibly value. Here i do have an attribution number. It is the Bolender variety B-5. It has a "bar"behind the bust as diagnostic. many thanks, Eduard
Counterfeit? i hope not. It was purchased at Bowers and Merena "Emerson and Faught Sale" June 1988. Lot 241. Eduard
Eduard, will you adopt me ? I am of German decent. You have been sharing some very nice coins with us. Thank You.
Very very nice. I am pretty amazed that there are still any like that on the market. I have a love for the flowing hair coins, but I have to make do with a really beaten up half, because the prices are so high...and I doubt I am ever going to expand that section of my collection.
That's a great, eye appealing example. Coins like this don't show up on the market too often. I think it could squeeze out VF-20.
Thank you all for your comments. As i explained before, i do not have access to the grading services, so i want to understand better what is the actual grade of my coins according to todays standards. And that is what i a getting through your comments . Grading in Europe tends to be quite different from that in the US: Both the grading scale itself, as well as the sensitivity to cleaning are very different here. That is why i want to know where i am at. So Very Fine 20 , or close to that it is then for this dollar coin? Thanks, Eduard
Another beautiful example of a fairly rare coin! Thanks for sharing it! I believe that that the coin is right on the line between F-15 and VF-20 and that it has probably been cleaned in the past. Frank
thank you for sharing this coin!!! i am extremely envious also....what an incredible piece of history to own!
Hello, To answer the question about the grade assigned to this coin in the sales catalog: it was originally graded as Very Fine 30, with bright surfaces. Yes, i do believe also that it was cleaned sometime in the past. I remember i asked the auctioneer about this and the reponse was :"most coins have been cleaned sometime in the past" I guess there is some truth to that. I decided to keep it anyway because the coin had a good overall appeal (and it was such a hassle to return it across the ocean). Eduard
