Alright ladies and gentlemen, this is my most recent purchase off FeeBay, paid a whole $10 plus shipping. I got it in the mail today and when I was checking for possible die varieties I noticed that the surfaces appeared much different then most 09 VDB's, and I have 100's of them, hence the name. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone may be able to shed some light, could it be the famed 1909 VDB Matte Proof? All opinions welcomed. I thank you for your time.
Unfortunately, it's missing one of the obvious die markers. The obverse die marker would naturally be hard to see, but the reverse one should show up very clearly.
To me the first nail in the coffin are the rims. By surfaces are you referring to the coloration or the texture?
This thread is like deja vu all over again (to quote Yogi Berra). Reference: Ebay...Still a Cherrypickers Paradise 2017'
Ya know. I've really never noticed how many times someone thinks they've found one of these until I found one.
I examined the coin more closely and it's NOT the matte proof. For someone who has never seen a matte proof in person, I believe it's a safe bet to ask about it. I didn't mean to start a controversy...lol.. I was asking for simple opinions.
Be sure to tune in next Thursday for the "Is this a 1909 VDB matte proof?" show. (just clowin', but it really does feel like these threads show up once a week)
You did the right thing. It's just finding a VDB Matte Proof raw in the wild on eBay is like hitting the PowerBall, Mega Millions and your state's lottery all together. And with the recent thread that was mentioned earlier, there is a bit of tension in the air regarding this subject.
