Trying to make early coin (Weaties) coin books for 13 grandkids. Exhausted all my wheaties Iv'e collected since 74. No way can i buy single coins to complete my grandbabies collections. The coin rolls on ebay seam to be tampered with (my opinion only) has anyone have an opinion or any fantastic resultes trying to complete earlier Lincoln using ebay roll cents this way
I don't think you will find much in rolls unless they specifically claim they are a certain year. I did once buy a bag of 5000 of them and found a decent number of pre-1930 and quite a lot of pre-1920, but perhaps you don't want to go that way. I think all but the rarest of year were actually found, but the condition was probably VG at best and often AG.
I agree, a local coin dealer can put a package together on AG (or whatever grade you want to buy) Wheaties to allow you to buy only the dates needed to fill the book.
It really depends what you need. If you need mostly key or semi-key dates, don't bother with ebay rolls. Any wheat rolls on ebay will be mostly common dates. That being said, I did buy some wheat rolls myself once to help my son complete his Lincoln cent collection. I live in the East where D and S coins are harder to find. So I bought a couple of mint mark only wheat rolls. I didn't find any key or semi-key dates of course, but I still found a handful of D and S coins that my son had no success finding in circulation even though they were not considered key dates. So if you are having trouble finding coins of a particular mint, buying ebay rolls might be worth it but make sure you check the description to confirm the rolls are limited to a particular mint or mints.
With the exception of five coins, your should be able to complete book one in the Whitman series for around $75. Surely you can afford that. As for the other five, they have been picked out many decades now.
I bought ten rolls of "unsearched" wheaties in the green wrappers about a month ago. Turns out there wasn't anything earlier than 1936. Most were 1956, 57 & 58. The best find was a 1937 that had machine doubling of the date and LIBERTY.
I would try a coin shop. You should be able to buy bulk. They usually are 3 or 4 cents apiece. Often times they will sell teens, 20's and 30's separately. They may cost slightly more. Good luck.
I purchase 3 rolls of "unsearched" wheaties from the bay with the preconceived notion that they weren't really unsearched. To my surprise there was about a rolls worth of pre 1930 wheaties (with some good semi keys) some nice MS 58's, a few indian heads and a steelie. I spent roughly $30 and was comfortable with what I received. Obviously that will vary between sellers - that was my only experience with buying rolls of wheaties. Good luck! I would suggest buying rolls or lots or individual groups that cover the specific dates/mintmarks you need. Check out these eBay sellers: toomba9641 (sells rolls with xx number of unique dates/mints) mar-boylmar-boyl (specific lots with photos to check quality) fittedshirt2002 (individual & small groups of coins in a variety of conditions) I have been happy with all 3 of these sellers. Good luck
That's how I do it. Every once in a while I sit on the deck with a class of wine, chatting with my wife, and sorting wheat pennies. I only get through maybe 40 or 50 at a time because it is mostly conversation, but I slowly accumulate full rolls of a specific date/mintmark. Then I put them up for sale. They don't sell quickly, because I am not overly generous with the asking price. But I am in no rush and they have sold.
