Hey all I just wanted to get an opinion about a peace dollar. Every so often I get a break from work and when I do I do some traveling to look for new places to metal detect and I always check classifieds ECT.. for coins in the area. I came across this coin and a few others a young lady is wanting to sell and I wanted your opinions on 2 questions. I know the photo's aren't the best but she says it's the best she can do and she didnt want to take it out of the plastic holder but the first question is does anything look to you opinion wrong? like possible counterfeit? And second she swears its a 1928 but to the untrained eye the 23 can look like a 28 from what you can see does it look like a 28 to you? I dont want too get my hopes up too much thinking I found a key date at a reasonable price so I thought i'd ask opinions. All in all if it isn't a 28 when I get there i'll probably pass on it unless I can talk her down on price and assuming it is real. I am taking my rare earth magnet, my loop, scales and tissue to be on safe side. One more question I know the weight is suppose to be 26.73 grams but what weight tolerance should I be worried about + or -? Thank you for any input......Eric. 1928peace1.jpg 1928peace2.jpg 1928peace3.jpg

Need a better set of eyes than mine (and especially this late) but it looks like 1923 to me.

Bummer :arghh: I will still stop and see if she is willing to negotiate. Still a Nice looking coin from what I can tell from photo but if she doesnt accept that it's not a 28 i'll have to pass.

The 23 and 28 Peace Dollars sometimes play tricks on the eyeballs.

I agree with the previous posters. Definitely a 23.

On a previous similar post, I said lighting. This time I say 23. If you get to see the coin, please let us know what it turned out to be.

That ornate 3 has probably fooled a million collectors over the years. I think I still have at least one 1923 from an eBay lot in a 2x2 labeled "1928!!" -- somewhere, a collector looking at it in-hand mistakenly thought it was a 1928.

I feel like I've gotten pretty good at distinguishing the two from marginal photos, but you can always make a photo poor enough to conceal the difference.

    My first glance indicates it's a 1923.

Well meeting the girl was a bust I sat waiting for her for over an hour and she didn't bother to respond. Even though meeting for the coin was a bust it wasn't a total loss because I found 4 new large NICE area's to search that I was given permission to metal detect and a very old school that the fellow I talked to said he'd ask his father if it is ok to search. All in all it was a good day the wife and I took a lazy afternoon drive and couldnt ask for nicer weather.
