Hi, needing input on whether this piece will likely go full head (FH) designation? I believe it will, but I'm partial to this coin already, so I"m soliciting your unbiased opinions. Also, although I have done my research, this is not my usual focus or comfort zone of collecting If up to it, please throw me your opinion on a potential grade range as well? She's super clean with one or two small tic marks, almost perfect condition (well again, in my opinion). I believe her strike & luster to be pretty solid, with some minor weakness in the left lower shield rivets and the eagle's chest definition, but strong dress and lower feet details. Please keep in mind, except for the first photo, all the other photos are macro shots. Thanks very much!
I agree nice strike as well coin, it's close to a FH but something tells me that as the TPG'S go today as fickle as they are you may or may not get it....or you'll get it and they will bag it as cleaned or questionable color. I'm seeing a AU-58 coin
The toning makes it challenging to see details, but here's a couple more, some with flash that may show the luster better.. Thanks!
Hey Paddy, thanks for taking a look. I agree on the FH situation in regards to the TPG's. I look at some of the FH's vs. non-FH's in auction sales and scratch my head? Also, please note the first pics may show up looking kind of different and grainy due to the macro nature of them? The second set are mostly with flash and some with an iphone (a mix). The coin was stored for many years in one of those Kraft envelopes, so due to the toning on such a small coin it's been a challenge for sure to try and capture all the details, but I can say this piece shows no signs of being circulated in-hand.
I disagree the leading edge of the wing from your images looks like wear. Again just an interpretation of your images. As having a SLQ type 1 graded in the last 6 months that also came back AU 58 FH I can assure you that the TPG'S are hit or miss on most of their calls that's a 50/50 chance. I also had a 1827 bust half come back details that when shown to 15 experts in this hobby each said it was not cleaned and was a higher grade then listed on the slab. The 15 asked were never asked if it was cleaned .....they were asked what they believed the coins grade and value was. This took place two weeks ago at the Baltimore show . And what was even more strange....the company that graded it as well as the coin to the left{ my Avatar } admitted that they got it wrong!
Wow, what a great story based on your recent experience! I can only guess that since it was the recent Baltimore show, there was probably some serious experience (connections) hanging around at that show behind those opinions, maybe putting the pressure on said company to take another look?! Did they agree to re-grade/upgrade your at the show? Just curious of the outcome? Also, thanks for the specific detail on the wing edge you mentioned so that I can try and gain more from your perspective. I do see what your're saying overall about the wing edge (looks smooth). I'm wondering if it could be chalked up to a weak strike in that central reverse area for this year/mint (again, this series is not my usual area of focus though)? Just thinking there would be more evidence in other areas of wear, and hairlines and nicks? As you said though, it's a hit or miss with the TPG's ultimately, so nothing would really surprise me :/.
No, not a full head of the 1917 s. pictures need to have indirect light, too much glare. Also, pictures need to be focused on the head, closer for details.
Thanks. I usually take my photos at my kitchen table as it is near three windows for lots of natural light, however, I'm not as practiced at photos of the smaller pieces such as this even though I use the macro setting and partially zoom. I sent the coin off to a numismatic friend of mine to take a look at, so I won't be able to take any photos currently.
Aside from the issues mentioned above, that coin screams, "I've been circulated". The dark toning across Liberty and much of the obverse appears to be from skin oil. And is that a finger print covering most of the obverse bottom left quarter? Of course, the reverse is pretty clean, so maybe it was just pushed into a folder and touched repeatedly.
Thank you I actually have it promised to someone already but pricing it raw has been challenging so I posted here to gain some insight. Looks like though I'll need to move forward and submit it for grading prior. By the way, your photography skills in the non-coin thread are amazing, every single photo has "wow" quality?!
