I suppose this is more of a variety than an error, but here goes -- In the change ejected from an LA Metro fare box was a Zachary Taylor dollar with an unusually formatted date. I've been unable to find any mention of it on the internet. Presidential dollar dates generally look like "2__0__ 0__9____D". This one is "2__0__0__9_D". (Underlines added to get proper spacing.) My photography attempts have been futile! Has anyone seen anything similar? Is it worth anything over a buck? (As the oldtimers on CT know, I'm a terrible photographer, and not a very serious collector of US coins.)
Sometimes the coins get 'jammed' to one degree or another in the Edge Lettering Machine. The coin is already in the E L machine, but a coin ahead of it gets jammed for some reason, and your coin didn't rotate the proper amount, so the edge elements are closer than is normally seen. It's possible that your coin is the result of that - a closer spacing between the 9 and the D . It's more of an anomaly, and I don't think that it would bring a premium, based on your description of the edge lettering. Hope this info helps. Fred
Welcome to Coin Talk Mr. Weinberg. For those members who do not know of Mr. Weinberg, he is a noted authority on error coins and one of the major - if not the major - error consultant used by the major TPGS. Mr. Weinberg is a member of PNG and has been a dealer in really neat error coins for what seems to me forever. He will be another great source of info here!
"Insider" - thanks for the kind words; hope I deserve them. However, I don't know who you are ?! Fred
Aah! There's the rub. None of the rest of us know who he is, either. For all I know, he's on the run from the law. J/K! Chris
