Yes before it was the cultural center it was the library and Grand Army of the Republic Memorial. If you looked around the top of the GAR room where there were dealers in a room of green marble you would see the names of all of the Civil War battles around the top in gold. Completed in 1893.
It was a wonderful show for the (unfortunately) short time I was there. I regret I had to leave much earlier than expected...
Thanks for the pictures, @Carthago! Scavenger hunt? What a fun idea! Do you know if they had many participants?
I did pick up this very scarce piece at the show... (Pardon my ad hoc iPhone photo...) Roman Republic Anonymous AR Drachm Half-Quadrigatus 225-212 BCE 3.1g 18mm Obv: Janus dotted border Rev: Jupiter in Quadriga LEFT, Victory riding, ROMA in Ex Ref: Craw 28/4 Sear 35 SCARCE The Pre-Denarii silver issues were made in Didrachm and Drachm denominations. They were among the FIRST SILVER productions that Rome minted. They are relatively harder to find now. However, the Drachm denomination seem VERY hard to find. I normally do NOT seek out duplicates, however as difficult it is to find RR Pre-Denarii Drachm, I snapped this one up. It was the only one at the show.
I didn't buy anything on the show floor but did manage to buy three coins from the auctions, one of which I nearly bought two years ago for 5x the price (snagged it very cheaply when it sold unpedigreed and with horrible pictures) and another of a type I've wanted for many years but never found an agreeable example. All around a good show in my eyes!
So, when do we see these coins? And the auctions to which you're referring -- were they posted on Sixbid?
My other two Roman Republic Pre-Denarii AR Drachmae: Roman Republic Anonymous AR Drachm Half-Quadrigatus 225-212 BCE 3.0g 18mm Obv: Janus dotted border Rev: Jupiter in Quadriga LEFT, Victory riding, ROMA in Ex Ref: Craw 28/4 Sear 35 SCARCE Roman Republic Anonymous Circa 240 BC. Ref: Crawford 25/2; Sydenham 25; RSC 34a; Sear 27 CNG Comments: Fine, toned, some cleaning/smoothing marks. Rare
Yes they were on Sixbid. I haven't posted new purchases in a while so this is a good time: here's a new thread with some commentary (and pictures): https://www.cointalk.com/threads/purchases-from-the-chicago-coin-expo.294363/
Awesome coin purchases, I really like the reverse on the RR coins. One of these days, got to pick one up.
I don't buy any high dollar stuff but I really found some great additions for my collection. As usual I poked around in row boxes and the usual suspects like Mark Reid from Time Machine and Josh from Civitas Galleries were super easy to work with and gave me good prices. I love going to shows to see all of the eye candy and chat with folks. But I like having time to really dig through older stock too because that is where I have made my best finds. I didn't see many kids there. Maybe three. But then again I was there all day Thursday and Spring Break in Chicago had passed already. Also I just don't think many young collectors go to this show in general. ANA always has more.
Is this mostly an ancient coin show? I work nearby but didn't get out early enough Friday to stop in and wasn't able to go downtown yesterday.
Yes, Chicago Coin Expo = Chicago International Coin Fair (CICF) which specializes in world and ancient.
