I have an 1887 VAM 12 PCGS MS65. Is there a way to check the graded population report for specific grades ? There is a 12 and 12A. If it was a 12A, would it have it on the flip/case or just as a VAM 12? Has not mint marker on it so does that make it an 1887 O? Sorry for the rookie questsions.
Also, if you are collecting all 100 VAMS, are the 12's and 12A's in the world required to complete? Is there a price difference between either one?
And you do need to confirm it really is what the label says. The TPGs, especially PCGS and NGC are notorious for getting attributions wrong. At least now PCGS does guarantee their attributions, NGC still does not.
The BEST of anything is subjective, but kitco.com is popular with several PM enthusiasts here on CT. FYI. For the best response don't add questions of a different subject (i.e. Morgan variety/BEST G/S app) to your original thread, rather start a new thread for your new topic. Lastly welcome to CT.
I use PCGS coinflation because it has a melt value calculator. I'm sure other members can give you better sites
PCGS only labels VAM-12. If anyone were to send a 12A clashed version to PCGS it would come back just VAM-12. (at least as of 12/2013 as noted on the VAMworld page) I'm not seeing the wing clash line of of ANNA's neck so my guess is yours is not clashed. You can get a general idea of the population report from the VAMworld pages for 12 and 12A. http://www.vamworld.com/1887-P+VAM-12 As for the TOP100 question, the 12 and 12A are grouped together so either or counts.http://www.vamworld.com/Top+100+Morgan+VAMs Hope this helps.
I believe this is the coin http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/133910 For checking varieties go to the PCGS population report http://www.pcgs.com/pop/detail.aspx?pno=1&c=744&p=MS&t=3 and then if there is a cross on the left of the coin you click that and a drop down opens up showing the various varities they have graded for that coin
I would check on VAMworld. Someone there will be an expert on this variety and can help you. If you want a solid attribution send the coin to VSS who VAMs them all and certifies the VAM with a sticker on your slab. VAMworld also has the list of top 100 and the set components listed. Good luck this is quite a challenge but I hope you make it.
PCGS labels all 12 and 12A as simply 12. 12A is post-clash and is vastly more common than the pre-clash 12. The rarity under the radar is the prooflike VAM-12. Gator Eyes are generally common coins, but there are a handful of prooflikes out there. I have one and have handled maybe 3 in decades. As for the discrimination, ANACS does make the differentiation and probably also ICG and SEGS. However, attributions made prior to the listing of the 12A of clashed ones would be VAM-12. The SSDC Registry (which I built and run) has always differentiated the two but registrations are as correct as the information supplied by registrants. The census there and the ANACS population reports are good places to look anyway.
