I'm looking for a bit of information on a lot (or lots?) in the Pittman Sale. This was a bit before I really got into collecting, but my understanding is that one of the sales was primarily world gold and patterns. I am looking for information on any coins from Morocco that may have been in his sale - specifically an 8-coin lot of piedforts with essai minted in the 40's and 50's. If anyone has any info about this lot, or has access to the catalogue, could you scan in the page from the auction? Or give me any sort of info? Thanks!
Let's broaden this up a bit.... anyone own any Pittman coins? Have any memories of Pittman, his collection, the sales, or anything related?
This may be of help to you, or, you may already be aware of it - but I believe these are the coins you are looking for. http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotvi...ot=31178&Val=3578796e14f34f7ca78f938e75f02586
Yes, those are in fact the coins I'm looking for. They were sold on Heritage yesterday. The reason I'm asking for historical information on them is because I just bought them
The Newman Numismatic Portal is super useful for researching a coin's pedigree from before the interwebz. https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/searchwithterms?searchterm=JOHN PITTMAN
I appreciate the suggestion. NNP was one of the first places I tried. Obviously, a famous collector like Pittman will have a number of hits.... but none of these are what I need. I tried every variation of "pittman" + morocco, africa, piedfort, akers, auction, and a few other terms. None of them hit the mark. I think in a few years, NNP will be a great and useful tool. I don't think it's there yet.
