I have a couple of jars with coins I purchased with misguided optimism of "uncleaned Roman coins" that have been sitting on my desk soaking in olive oil for the last year or so, probably more. I took a better look today at one of the lots and of course there wasn't much to get excited about. One of the items looks Byzantine(?). Any help in attribution would be appreciated. Scyphate. 3.63g. 25mm. Any ideas?
Hard to say. Close to one of mine. Theodore I Mint: Nicaea Billon trachy 1208 to 1212 AD Obvs: MP ΘV, The Virgin enthroned holding nimbate head of Christ. Revs: Theodore and Saint Theodore holding patriarchal cross between them. 25x30mm, 2.7g. Ref: DO 4.460.5a However the uniform doesn't match up. This is closer, but really depends on the obverse as well.
This is my only Trachy... I cannot tell you who yours is... BZ Manuel I Comnenus 1143-1180 CE Aspron Trachy 35mm 4-6g Christ Gospels Labaran globus cruciger Virgin maphorium SB 1966
These can be tough to attribute. You will need a copy of Sear's Byzantine Coins & Their Values. From there you would have to narrow it down to the obverse and reverse combinations, compare to who issued the same exact types. No idea if you can find an online database of them.
