It's hard for me to tell on any of them because of the dirt inside the "D".

Wasn't the D/S north for the most part?

How do I go about removing the dirt inside the "D"?

Try soaking it in pure acetone. If that doesn't do it, you might try (gently) picking it out with a rose thorn.

If you have never used it before, use with great caution in a well ventilated area. It's also good for getting crud off copper coins. After a soak in the acetone, follow by a rinse of distilled water. Or just boil your own water so it's contaminent free.

... well away from the acetone, especially if using a gas stove. ;)

Absolutely what Books said. Don't boil the water with the acetone anywhere near it.

Is there any length of time (min/max) these coins should be in the acetone?
