Here is another tetradrachm I acquired of Severus Alexander. This one features a neat "spike chin" similar to the famous U.S. Large Cent. Only got it since it went cheap. Severus Alexander (222 - 235 A.D.) Billion Tetradrachm Alexandria, Egypt O: AKAMAAVPCEYALEXANDPOCEYC, Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. R: eagle standing left, head turned right, holding wreath in beak. L-S=Year 6 Alexandria Mint 11.8g 24mm Köln 2438, Dattari 4410, Emmett 3099 Spike Chin Cent, not mine.
Totally looks like So, not only do modern coins steal their eagles and seated deity designs from ancient coins, they also stole ancient errors?
Very nice Mat - me likey!! I don't have any Severus Alexander coins to show, but I can play the 1804 1/2 Cent: Now that I'm past the dull last few hundred years what should I do with her? --WILL TRADE FOR ANCIENTS-- that's it!
Great coin! I think you should slab it, call it the "Severus Alexander Spiked Chin LIBERTY Eagle", and sell it to the Modern collector for a FORTUNE (hey, it's SLABBED!)
Interesting! I wonder if the spike occurred in antiquity in the same way as reportedly with the 1804 half cent, i,e through a slip of the engraving tool. My example of the 1804 1/2 Cent- Spike Chin:
Im sure there may be someone who'd fall for it. Nice Spike, Eduard. I have always liked these. I just have a half cent of the type, no spike on it.
Oh man, nice Nero OP-winner (congrats Mat) Ummm sadly, I only have one Nero example ... but it's one of my favourites, so I'm gonna post it, okay? (thanks) => NERO Rocks!! => congrats again on that sweet OP-addition
ooops, I f-ed-up (again) ... apparently I needed to find a Sev-Alex example, eh? (my bad) => there ya go ... a Sev Alex example (I knew I had one hidden somewhere)
neat! i have a funky nose die break... so what's the deal with the US half cent error, they ran off a whole batch before they noticed the mistake or something?
very cool ... total winner (aww crap, I'm already hammered .. I had the day off) Apparently, I've gotta go out and light-er-up! ... I'm sure that I will (please stay tuned) ... Friday Night stevex6 is on the ramp! ... I'll try to avoid late-night-keyboard-ness (it often causes a lot of Saturday morning deleting!!)
Cool 'error' coin!! Here's my file photo of a spiked-chin type and a 'normal' sestertius...Hmmm, I see a tiny 'spike' on his chin
Not sure if that is a die-break... I think it is the die-maker's rendition of "just after a sneeze"...
