coin with dime on one side and penny on the other

I think a true 10 + 1 mint error could only be struck on a dime planchet, since a penny planchet would be too big to fit in the dime press.

When I was in high school Myself and a couple of buddies were ice fishing ... not catching anything and one of my friends was throwing his ice spud trying to hit a penny on the ice... he hit it and a cap popped off one side of the penny exposing a dime face under the capped side... that is why i was on here searching for it just remembering back... I was just thinking about it and was wondering what that was...

 

Hi Don, I collect coins that were created to do magic tricks. These coins are called Magicians Coins and they are found in different denominations and types. You and you friend happened to have what is called the Penny and Dime trick. It's a hollowed out Cent that covers the Dime and Cent that were cut to fit each other perfectly. The Cent and Dime gimmick fits right into the Cent shell. Here is the picture of what you would find at a magic shop. The ring is used to place the coin and bang on a hard surface to loosen the half cent half dime.

 

What was the most recent 'mule'...I remember a Sacagewea $ with a Quarter reverse (Eagle) on a Golden coin planchet????

I had it for several years now since I tried cashing my coins in at a Walmart Coinstar machine and the machine rejected it. Don't remember where I got it from but just put it on my dresser n fgot about it til now.

 

does the edge have reeding, a smooth edge, or both?

Both sides of each coin r very thin. It ain't no ms66 premium gem but wondering if it could b a sister coin of the same batch.

 

My friend has the same coin with the obverse of each coin. They are also rotated about 20 degrees from true.

 

But the mule would have to be struck in the cent press. A cent die won't fit into the collar on the dime press, but you could install a dime die in the cent press. And if you have a cent die, a cent collar and a dime die, the press is probably feeding cent planchets.

 

Magician coins are uncommon ( unless you are a magician) but easily made and available. See this ad by a professional magician.

Ok ... He started in 1992 and my grandfather died in 1995....it was decades before who knows, I'm 41 and remember my grandpa showing me this coin at 5 years old. He showed me because he thought the coin was special.. The penny is definitely pre-82 and the dime is possibly silver? 64 or earlier.

 

The coin is a magician's coin. They have been making them for decades.
