Do any of you guys know of a good place to get a nice magnification loop from? The only place here that has them is Books-A-Million and they are around 40 bucks for a 12x.....no way I'm paying that.

I'd like to have at least a 12 to 16x loop but can't afford the 40 dollar price range around here.

Any of you guys know of a good place to get a cheap one? Or possibly have one you don't use anymore you'd like to part with for monetary gain?

You could allways try Ebay :smile

Yea, that's probably the route I'm gonna go. Though I still hate the shipping severe overcharging that happens at times.

Not to mention that "buy it now" on the cheaper ones is a bit of a problem since I'm sans credit card.

Do you have any local coin shops? Around here you can find decent ones starting at about $8.00.

The ANA has a nice 4x for under $20! I use that along with a 10x but think I'll also pick up a 20-25x next time I find one.

I just picked up some in an eBay purchase:

    • A large loupe (2 inches) with approximately 5X strength
    • a 10X 18mm loupe
    • a 30X 21mm loupe - This did not ship in the original package but the seller assures me it's on the way. - For the record - the seller has been great to deal with even with this split shipment.
    • a free gift of ML7526 rotating loupe with levels from 5x to 12x
The price including shipping was $10.50 - For that price I felt like I bought something that fell off a truck. Here is the Auction number: 160145665406.

I would love to find a large magnifier like Ruben did, but in the short term these will do nicely.

Now I can keep one at work and have a couple different options at home. Quality of these is probably not as good as you can fine but I can see the surface of coins much better now than I could before. Also, now I will have my own loupe when I go to shows and that really would have come in handy for the last show I went to. I am certain my purchases would have been a little different.

    Good Luck

I personally have trouble using my 10X loupe well.
I'd hate to try anything more powerful.
But I suspect with practice I'd get better.

Thinking along that line, I would suggest working your way up.
    Start with a 3X to 5X AND a 10X.
They will always be useful and not particularly expensive.
If you find the 10X still doesn't do it for you, then look at the more powerful ones.

I have a 6x now, but it's just not cutting it. Even a 10x or 12x would work, though with my error searching I'd like to have at least a 20x.

Bad eyes haha.....great thing for a coin lover eh?

I agree that you need something stronger when looking for errors even with good eyes. When I see some of the things on this and other forums (just with the nickel mint marks) I realize that I need a strong loupe for roll searching and shows.

You can try a jewler or jewlery supplier.
