Question I have is when does a rim ding effect the grade of the coin? Can a rim ding be on an uncirculated coin, I guess can it get the ding in the mint bag? Reason, I have a chance to buy a very nice 1921 peace dollar that is graded MS-63 and I agree with the grade. It is one of the best struck 21's I have ever run across, could be considered fully struck, and that is a big deal with the 21's, but is has a rim ding. I don't think it is too bad, but the dealer who is respected in the numismatic world so that it shouldn't affect the grade, what do you all think?
Everything I've ever read has said a rim ding will effect the grade. Of course, I've bought many coi ns with dings along the rim that were otherwise perfect, so they may be damaged in the minting process somehow. I say if you like everything else about the coin, get it. If the rim ding doesn't bother you, what else could you ask for? Guy~
Rim dings= bad. no rim dings= good. However respected your dealer is, this is bs, that it won't effect the grade.
It will effect the grade in direct proportion to the damage caused to the coin by the ding, ask yourself this if someone offer you a coin with a rim ding and called it perfect what would you say? Everything about the coin will have a bearing on what it grades at.
The ding would/should affect the technical grade and perhaps the ability to have it slabbed. But if the coin is otherwise as described, it might be worth owning anyway if the dealer will discount it a bit for the ding. This is one of those cases where you have to decide for yourself if you are going to let some of the persnickety rules of the hobby prevent you from owning a coin you would like to have, or if you are going to go your own way and construct a collection of coins that YOU like. From the way you describe the coin, you're going to kick yourself in the future if you don't buy it.
I too say if you like the coin, don't worry about a ding or two even. If you are buying it to resell, that may be different. But for yourself, it is just not that important. You stated it was graded but you didn't say it was in a slab. Was it graded and slabbed? Regardless, anyone that says a ding, scratch, etc on the rim or anywhere else makes no difference is full of ....... Think of it like you buy a new car. There is a dent on the top. The dealer tells you to pay the full price because that dent is on the top so not noticable so the car is perfect. You go to a store and buy a watermelon. The store owner says it is a perfect one. You see a large dirt mark and dent on the bottom. He tells you that makes no difference in the taste so it is still perfect. All sort of dumb but see what I mean.
I really think this thing about rim dings, scratches, "very light" cleaning etc is ridiculous. As long as they arn't obtrusive, then pretend they aren't there. You don't even need to pretend they arn't there !
It all depends on the severity of the rim ding. If bad enough the coin would be body bagged by the TPG's, which is probably why it is raw now - and considered to be a problem coin by any future buyer even if left raw. The real risk you face is if the dealer is asking 63 money for the coin, but if because of the rim ding the coin is only worth AU50 money - big difference there.
