I feel like the trend started when a rainbow toned Oregon Trail half sold at auction for about $69k some years ago. The sale and the coin made headlines. There are some very beautiful toned examples out there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I wouldn't now. But as a neophyte collector I didn't know what I liked and so bought a wide variety of coins to that I could discover what I wanted to concentrate on. I still have most of those coins.
I once saw a coin in an auction at NYINC in which the cataloguer used the term "anthracite toning" to describe that dark purple. Great color name. Made me go see it in the lot preview room. Almost impossible to photograph.
That Oregon Trail is to die for! I plan to make another 20th century type set. I'll start with whatever toning I have. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk
I was thinking the same thing, but I'm already on too many you-know-what lists around here. Truth-telling is an underappreciated skill on CT, you know.
Reminds me of an incident that happened a while back. I was at a family gathering and as usual was teasing with my nieces and nephews. We were talking, having fun, and I made some wisecrack to one of them. Immediately afterwards I added - the devil made me say it. At the time one of my great nieces, 7 yrs old, cute as a button and sharp as a tack, who happened to standing at my knee looked up at me when I made that comment and just as serious as she could be, said - why did you say the devil made you say it Uncle Doug ? I explained to her that it was just a saying, a way for a person to say that they were just teasing you. To which she responded, again just as serious as one could be - I think you've got a lot of the devil in you Uncle Doug ! I about fell right of my chair I was laughing so hard. As they say, from the mouths of babes ........
