Just in passing, had been about to return 2 boxes of Jefferson's to the bank, All re wrapped and pretty, saw a video stating that the 2009 was a low mint coin; Sooo you know the rest of the story ..... so now they are back ready for the bank. Out of those 2 boxes only gleaned 4 ..... but 4 is better than zero huh? lol Everybody have a good day.
It may be a low mintage compared to the hundreds of millions produced in other years, but I really don't consider 39+ million for Philly and 46+ million for Denver to be low mintages. What do other Jeff collectors have to say? Chris
I save them hoping one of my grand kids takes an interest in the hobby Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I keep every decent 2009-P & 2009-D nickel I come across which are very few. BTW, here in Texas the Philly version is just about impossible to find. Yes, someday my grandkids might consider them valuable!
The longer that 2009 coins circulate, the more worn, tarnished and banged up they're going to be, which over time could give AU/BU specimens a premium. Until I got back into collecting around 2014, I had no idea that most 2009's were lower mintage - the average non-collector on the street doesn't know this, even if they do know about silver quarters and buffalo nickels. My only observation over 5 years as a non-collector was that the Lincoln anniversary pennies weren't super common in change (even when brand new), and the same with the US territories quarters.
Some boxes I'll find no 2009 nickels at all, all 2009 coins had low mintages compared with other modern coins, but the nickels were exceptionally low compared with other denominations. And, usually when you do come across them they're in lower grades. I've heard that there wasn't much need for nickels in the mainland US after the 2008 recession so a lot of the 09 nickels were sent to Puerto Rico and many of the 09 nickels for sale on Ebay are from PR sellers. While there isn't likely to be much of a premium for them anytime in the near future I still hold onto them whenever I come across them, being that they seem to be somewhat scarce in the wild.
I pull all the 2009 I find 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and $1. That said, they are low mintage for the last 70 years but not that low. And a lot were pulled in 2009 and 2010 in uncirculated condition or very nearly so. So I don't really expect a big premium, since there will be lots of UNC, even in the higher grades, not as much premium as one might hope. Still, I do pull them. What coins will gain big value? No one knows.
