So probably over a year ago now, I was at an antique show and there were a couple tables of coins. One guy had some ancients for practically nothing so I bought a couple. Now at this time I had absolutely no clue about anything regarding ancients. Now since Im a little more knowledgeable, I decided to try and attribute them. Now they are a bit rough as is expected since I only paid like $14 for both (cant be sure, but I know it was under $20 for both). So here is the first one and please correct me if Im wrong. CONSTANTINE I AE Follis, Lyons Mint 315-316 AD IMP CONSTANTINVS AVG, laureate, draped & cuirassed bust right SOLI INVIC-TO COMITI, Sol, radiate, standing left, holding globe and raising right hand. TF and star across field PLG mintmark (cant see it in the pic but i could make it out with a loupe in hand) Lyons RIC VII 32 2.86g, 20mm I will post the second one, when I think I have it figured out.
I put weight & diameter at the top. I don't think there is a "right" way to do it though. Here's mine from Rome: Constantine I, AD 306-337 Æ follis, 22mm, 2.9g, 12h; Rome mint, AD 314-315. Obv.: IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev.: SOLI INV-I-CTO COMITI, Sol standing half left, radiate, nude but for chlamys over shoulders and left arm, raising right hand commanding the sun to rise, globe in left hand, R over X on left, F on right In Ex.: RS Also for about $7 not bad at all!
Ok. So there is going to be confusion here and Im sorry for that. So, over a year ago I bought two folles. The one in this thread is one of them. However, I couldnt attribute them at the time and they got pushed to the back of the safe and were forgotten. Awhile later I purchased a Domitian denarius and another Constantine follis. Both posted in this thread:https://www.cointalk.com/threads/well-i-finally-gave-in.284101/ Also attributed both wrong. In that thread I claimed those to be my first ancients. I was wrong. About a month ago I found and remembered these other folles. I decided tonight I would try to attribute them. I also posted an Augustus denarius the other day.
I was wondering that but since I haven't got a copy of RIC VII yet I was going with wildwinds but they have it as IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG. I'm assuming that's a mistake?
