I bought this on eBay with no doubt as to authenticity, but the raised dots on the obverse and general look of the surfaces have me very concerned.
Well the off center strike looks legit. Maybe it was struck with a badly pitted die? Im curious about that date though. Did you try finding the Snow variety?
I'm not sure I can make a call on the coin's authenticity, but based on the bumps, the ribbon sinking into the field, the date details, and the knowledge level of the poster, I might venture a guess about the closing date of the auction.
100% counterfeit! Not even a deceptive fake. I should have bought it but you beat me to it. The micro-granular surface on the top of the letters and relief is the giveaway. Those easier seen large rounded pimples should have kept other bidders away.
Fun coin. I would have bid on it but never saw it. I'll trust @Insider saying it's fake. Still a cool looking coin to me. The reverse is interesting. The color and the dark spots give it a look of being real and the granular look makes me think a rusty die could create that look.
Yes, me too. But raised dots are never something I've seen on an authentic coin. The seller accepts no returns - they're a jewelry store with no bad feedback. Hopefully they didn't know better. I sure didn't based on their pics (The above pics are mine). Hope I get my money back.
Is not. Was not a joke. 1st counterfeit I've bought in a year and definitely the most expensive one at nearly $400.
