I bought this off the bay. I know I paid more than it's worth for the grade it is assigned. But it just had so much going for it, I just had to have it. The color is phenomenal, which is what grabbed my eye first. Then after studying the buyers images, I could see it had an insane clash.

The clash on the obverse is much more subtle than the reverse. The reverse is to die for. You can trace most of Washington's profile from his neck to his nose, then the from the bridge of his nose to his forehead. It starts back up at the back of his upper head all the way down to the bottom of the of the ribbon in his pony tail.

Grade wise, It's over graded in my opinion, but at this point I don't care. It's a PCGS MS-66 and it's a beauty that I am proud to add to my personal collection. I have alway's loved clashed coins. Now I need to find a Mercury Dime with strong clashing.

    Oh wow, youre good !
Ive never seen a clash that strong on a quarter. Those dies had to REALLY clang together in order for an imprint to be left on a device like that. Nice color too!

Yeah they certainly gave this one a grade bump for color. I was surprised they were doing this back in the 2002 - 2004 timeline. It's in a Gen 4.1 holder according to PCGS.

In hand the clashing is just amazing. You can see images of feathers behind George's neck. You can also see a line coming from George's eye from the arrows on the reverse. On the Reverse you can make out George's eye just above the arrows. I've never seen a clash quite so dramatic, especially in the Washington Quarter Series.

I'll try to get some detailed images posted later tonight or over the weekend.

Ok. I couldn't help myself. I had to make an animated gif of an overlay. They are not perfect, but check it out.

    Here's George's face.

And the back of George's head with a full pony tail.

I would imagine they just made a heck of a noise. I wonder how long they ran the press before they either pulled the dies or repaired them.

You just gotta love it when you stumble upon something that you're not out looking for. :)
