Okay, I've held off long enough to agree with so many others. JUST collect coins. Read about them. Learn about them. Look at all of the great advice you get on CoinTalk. I know that many "preach" about not investing but on the other hand if you know your coins well enough and see a great deal (and can afford it) go for it! There are SO many types of coins out there and ALL are pretty cool in one way or another. I am a 2 Cent Junkie. It took me about 30 years to decide to complete that set and it's business strikes only. Yeah, now I'm playing with 3 Cent Silver, 3 Cent Nickel and 20 cent pieces but if I see a nice half cent, barber coin, bust coin, standing liberty etc. etc. etc. and the price is right there's a good chance I'll buy it. Just recently switched gears to semi key Lincolns as I think they'll continue to go up. Am I a Lincoln nut? No, but if I can get decent examples, make a few bucks in the future and toss it into something else then I'm good with it. Don't get me wrong if another coin pops up I'll abandon the Lincolns. I guess if you really get down to it this is why COIN COLLECTING ROCKS!
Both are nice sets..Speedy can help you on the Frankies for sure!! If it were me, I would go for the gold...or high end paper!! Good luck in what ever direction you choose..just do what you like and the choice will come to you easy!! Post some pics... RickieB
I would choose the high end franklins. I like the larger silver coins to begin with. And this set is more likely to be completed and will look great. Also, Speedy is here to assist you and answer questions since he is a franklin expert.
Don't get me wrong, I'm currently working a nice set of barber dimes, and a set of franklins, but when I see a deal. I snap it up, like its going out of style.
Don't limit yourself. I'm currently working on several different sets...but that will not stop me from grabbing a coin from a different series.
I would not choose any particular set at first. Find what catches your eye, and makes you want to own it. If no one type of coin stands out, you could consider building high-quality type sets, and go from there. I also find reading about the history behind the coins quite interesting.
It's nice to see that I'm not the only one that can't decide on a set to work on. I was thinking of doing the JFK's and Frank's since they are reasonably priced and my budget is limited. But was also thinking of buying the mint sets and proof sets to put together the sets since most of those are pretty cheap too, but then I'll also have a very nice set of everything else that comes with the mint & proof sets. So I will probably end up buying mints and proofs and whatever else catches my eye
