I know we have had this topic a few times already, but I really feel like seeing some legionary denarii - I know many of you have some. So post them if you have them! Here some hastily shot pictures of my small collection of legionaries: Legionary denarii of Marcus Antonius, of Septimius Severus, and a restitution legionary in the name of M. Aurelius and L. Verus for Marcus Antonius.

I never tire of showing my MA Legionary denarii. I also have one on the way in the mail and I'm superstitious enough not to post it till it arrives. It's a pretty good quality Leg III
Those are IMPOSSIBLE!!! Nice job. You know this as well as everyone, it is so tough to find "great" Antony Legios! Well done!
That's a really nice pic, Eduard. I still need one of those restitution types. Lots of other nice ones in this thread, too. However, I have to say I think it was quite impolite of @Volodya to have used his time machine to go back and steal from all those poor legionnaires. Right after they were paid those minty-fresh denarii, at that! On the other hand, I think my Leg XI here was used for a century or two... Coincidentally, I just shot this Leg VII yesterday, though I've had it for over a year. Quite a large area of flatness, but not affecting the legion number. And one for the Praetorian cohorts...
most famous coin in roman history, post them iff you have one hehe Great coins! i have see it to much to buy one? A legeonary As Commodus young in Marcus Aurelius time
Marc Antony (44 - 30 B.C.) AR Denarius O: ANT AVG III VIR R P C, Praetorian galley right. R: LEG III Aquila between two signa; LEG III across lower field. Patrae mint 32-31 B.C . 3.14g 18mm Crawford 544/15; CRI 350; Sydenham 1217; RSC 28 Legio III Gallica was levied by Julius Caesar around 49 BC, for his civil war against the conservative republicans led by Pompey. The legion took part in all Julius Caesar's campaigns against his enemies, including the battles of Pharsalus and Munda. Following Caesar's death, III Gallica was integrated in the army of Mark Antony for his campaigns against the Parthians. They were included in the army levied by Fulvia and Lucius Antonius (Antony's wife and brother) to oppose Octavian, but ended by surrendering in Perugia, in the winter of 41 BC. After the battle of Actium and Antony's suicide, the III Gallica was sent again to the East, where they garrisoned the province of Syria. III Gallica was used in Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo's campaign against the Parthians over the control of Armenia (63). Corbulo's successes triggered emperor Nero's paranoia of persecution and eventually the general was forced to commit suicide. After this, III Gallica is transferred to Moesia province, in the Danube border.
My sole example from the original sellers photo---and since unslabbed---is beginning to feel awfully lonely LOL
Love those legionnary denarii. Very nice examples all around. Sadly I only have one Mark Antony, Denarius mint travelling with Mark Antony, c.32-31 BC ANT AVG III VIR RPC, Galley right LEG IV, Legionary eagle between two standards 3.67 gr Ref : HCRI #352, Cohen #30 Q
These are assorted Eastern mint Septimius Severus legionaries. A few of them are only scarce. The others are rare. Alexandria Very rare with reverse ending AVG Only scarce with AVI Emesa Legion VIII is most common ...unless it has IICOS on the reverse LEG XIIII is only scarce but nice ones are much harder to find for some reason. From Rome, the hard one to find is LEG XXII PRI. Very few have full reverse legend but most are IDed easily by the PRI.
Very nice, everybody! Bing, great fleet of legionaries you have there (and another one coming). Alegandron, Mikey, Zumbly, Mat, Cucumbor, Ro, Orfew: thank you all very much for posting your great legionaries. Doug, those are beautiful examples of eastern mont legionary denarii of Septimius Severus. I know that as a type, they are quite a bit scarcer that the issues minted at Rome. Have yet to find one. Volodya, well, your examples are just everybody's dream.....
I have some Rome mint(1 still en route) LEG I ITAL LEG VIII AVG Alexandrian III AVI III AVG Emesa II CO, VIII AVO II C, X-IIII GE-M M V COS II, X-IIII GE-M M V
I love the type and hope to collect more. You all have posted some great coins. I only have these two low grade examples.
Aha! Now that all the legionary denarii specialists have been gathered together in one place, I can hijack this thread! This is one of my university coins I'm currently cataloguing. Is there any hope of identifying the legion of this Antony denarius? I've tried to catch the light to help, but it might be beyond hope. But I thought specialists might know a few identifying tricks I don't.
Albert, Martin, many thanks for posting your examples. The Alexandrian issues you post have an interesting style. I realize those are quite scarce. I have not seen many LEG III AVI before. Gavin, I hope somebody here can help you I have a similar problem to you with this coin. I find it impossible to determine the legion this coin was struck for.
Nice examples everyone. I still only have this one Leg VI. Gavin it looks like yours might be II maybe?
