As usual on a Sunday I went to a coin show. Last Sunday a dealer I've delt with many times showed me a late acquisition of his and it was a 1955Lincoln Cent Double Die in about MS-60 or -62. Naturally pending on who says what. Didn't have the money at the last show so he said he'ld save it for me for this show. He did, I bought it. A close inpection looked like cleaned some time ago. He lowered the price a little more when I pointed that out. Hate to mention paying this much for a coin but it ended up at $1,300. I've purchased cars for less than for this coin. I have a few of them now but not in this grade. If the photo comes out, here is what it looks like:

The reverse is actually much bette.
Also, purchased a lot of other coins. One of those days when you get home you look into a mirror and say "what an idiot. You just spent a lot of money for some old coins" Oh well there was no answer from the mirror so I guess everything is OK.

There's an AU 53 PCGS on Heritage and they want $1936. So that makes your deal sound pretty good!

Wow - look at that coin too long and you feel like you need a serious pair of glasses - or that you have had too much to drink :thumb: .

Nice purchase - Thank for sharing

Glad everyone sees the same thing or I'd be at the vision center having my eyes examined. Of course I've seen coins like this many times after leaving a bar.

For extra effect, look at the 1955 DD while drunk, and maybe you'll see a quadrupled die?

Really, really nice coin though. One day, I'm going to get one of those somehow.

Didn't work. Two Martini's and the coin looked normal but everything else doubled.

Cleaned or not that is one COOL coin.

Actually one of the few error coins that I WOULD REALLY LOVE TO OWN.
By the way, I STILL pay less than that for cars. Drive em till they blow up. Coins tend to go up in value cars go down.

Now the BIG question. Do you think that coin will possibly EVER be as rare as the errors seen on the new dollars every stinking day?

Sorry everyone. I HAD to ask that.

    Carl,
I would recommend sending your coin to anacs for Certification. There are some very exceptional counterfeits that exist for 1955 double dies.

I should add that I have no reason to believe it is counterfeit.

:eek:hya::thumb:It's really very nice. Cleaned or not. Send it off for grading and be happy you've got something most of us have never held in our hands. You're gonna love this coin for a long time. Good going.

My 1955 DDO is in an ANACS AU-55 holder.
It cost a bit more than yours.
