Built a hillbilly copy-stand today using a height gage (I am a hobby machinist), a camera mount from a tripod, and some cable ties. Used compact fluorescent "Daylight" bulbs (6500K) for lighting.

Using my cheapie Kodak digital camera (kid took her nice camera back) and fiddling with some settings, this is about the best pic I got.

Looks great to me! You might want to diffuse the light a bit with a piece of nylon.

Here is few tips you may want to try. For the most part take the photos outside. Save money on eletric bills and special lamps. Place coins on a black background. Neighbors car hood or trunk. Just kidding. Use a piece of black non glaring cloth or cardboard for a background. Do not put coins in direct sunlight. Find a shaddy area. Hold your breath when taking any photos. When you breath, your chest expands and contracts and your arms move with them and so does the camera.

Just a minor point but often telling.
In general have your lighting come from the northwest.
Sometimes to emphasize a particular feature you have to change that.
But the eye/brain combinations works best with NW lighting.
