Ok this one I can see as AT. What gets me is when eagles like this straight grade. Personally, I dont see this one as NT: https://coins.ha.com/itm/modern-bul...s/a/1117-1775.s?ic4=ListView-Thumbnail-071515
That one is actually very reminiscent of PCI holdered Eagles. My guess would be someone sent it in an original PCI holder to cross to PCGS. Similar to this (not my coin, I found the photo on ebay)
Yes the labels (chemicals used to create the colors on the label) cause the toning. Also, the holders aren't necessarily airtight, so storage methods combined with the labels could accelerate the toning.
I kinda doubt this one would straight grade, due to the black streak on the reverse. But otherwise she's a perfect type coin.
That streak on the reverse is caused by an improper alloy mix in the planchet. It is pre-strike and usually doesn't preclude slabbing. This one has a patch of hairlines in the lower left field of the obverse and would never slab, but I like it.
@Randy Abercrombie reminded me of this thread with his beautiful 1794 cent https://www.cointalk.com/threads/the-reason-this-old-guy-has-issue-with-tpg’s.349153/ Let's see if anyone has something new to add. I'll start with this Flying Eagle Cent from my type set. The slab photos were from the original listing and the last one was my attempt to show "Dean" adding his signature to the coin. Why Dean chose this coin is a mystery, but it's something interesting to me and fits nicely in my album.
Great thread. Honest coins that did their assigned duties and are still lovely. I’ll add my environmentally damaged 1794 cent that I am currently having a deep and meaningful relationship with.
@Lehigh96 reminded me of another one that I have. It is also whizzed, but to my eye it is still attractive.
