The 55-S is a die chip. It is relatively common and can be found almost anywhere on letters or numbers, particularly on Lincoln cents. Keep in mind that the mintmark for the 58-D was hand punched into the die, so such an anomaly would be referred to as a repunched mintmark (RPM).
