they are calling them athiest dollars, and there are supposedely about 25000 Washington no edge lettering dollars (is that accurate?) What will these be worth in ten years and why (speculate). thanks
I think these will prove the be popular in the future due to the magnitude, popularity, and uniqueness of the error. It's anyone's guess on the value in 10 years, dart shot in the dark, $150-$250
If there are 25,000 out there (and I don't know any better than you do) the VAST majority will be uncirculated due to the current hype. Legit ones wil be slabbed by TPGs like PCGS. Can you see the edge of a coin in these slabs? Anyone that has ever seen a 1955 Double Die Lincoln in person can see that it's a really cool error. Once again can you see the edge of slabbed dollar? It seems there are going to be a lot of errors in the Presidential series and we still have quite a few to go. Betting we continue to see "errors" in the future. The only thing the "atheist" dollar has going for it is that it was the first "error". I wouldn't sink my money into these as it were. Hell, I'll only spend a buck for one right now. Think about it - what helped fuel this craze. Oh yeah, the media. How often do you really see coin related stories in the media. Like next to never. The mint is pushing the dollars and the media is buying into it. When this error was first discovered I had people mention it to me lke they were suddenly coin experts. You know none of them mentioned any REAL coins as those would actually take knowledge of the hobby, history and a sliver more than a few brain cells. Media reported it so it must be true. 10 years down the road. Maybe $100 on the CoinVault where the uninformed buy garbage.
clembo: Gee, not overly negative today, are we. Those folks on coin vault are worth their weight in BS. (LOL)
I'm just amazed that with all of the technology available today, the Mint makes so many significant errors. Can you imagine any other manufacturing process turning out consistent defects? Anyway, I think the error coins will always be worth several times the regular coins in the same condition. But today's prices seem far too high since so many of the error coins will be slabbed in MS condition.
I own a triple (or quadruple) error, no edge lettering, clashed dies and both sides struck through grease. I think this coin has a world of potential. Picked it up for $80, but I wouldn't part with it for less than $300.
I have a lot of coins and a very small amount of organization. I will find it and post a pic. give me a couple of hours....
error to be or not to be ,is that the question encil: I seem to remember many so called profesionals in the coin business saying that the wisconsin error was nothing and that it would'nt be worth squat in a year or two after the "hype" ... we all know how that turned out .....
NGC alone has slabbed over 30k smoothie Washingtons the last I looked. Granted many have been resubmitted but still think the number will be high. Some estimates I have seen range from 40k to 100k. No one will ever know for sure. The Adams inverted and reverted what ever you want to call them seem to be much less . If* the mint gets these errors under control and they become the exception instead of the rule , it could be interesting. *idicates a monster If.
