Is this 1980 missing initial a overzealous die polisher again? Sorry I listed the photos as an 82 grrrrr. Thank you and greatest apologies
Yes I wish I could zoom in a little closer with that new microscope/camera; really enjoy it but can't; was the only let down I have about it. Other than that it really saves my old back and eyes. From the looks of things, I do not believe that there is a bubble, turning it from North to South pretty much looks the same, but being greener than Granny Smiths apples, just ...... ?? Did not even think it could be a grease spot; to used to thinking large I guess. Thank you all for the increase in knowledge once again. You all are great. Guess I will just keep on looking and looking.
Can't help myself on this one. This is one good example why grease fill die is not an appropriate answer. Good possibility of being a debris fill die. USMC60
Grease filled die is the correct term and everyone in the hobby understands the term. There is no value in changing it.
Well I can see you missed it. And you're totally correct it's an old term let me reemphasize in the word old. This is 2017 and with today's production of coinage I personally believe debris is a better choice of words and it is also a correct term. And it doesn't leave someone with the impression they're looking for (grease spots). USMC60
I'm almost sure that 99.9% of those in this hobby will keep calling it a grease filled die. Good luck with trying to change that.
Change is always had a starting origin. Look throughout history how just one person can make a change. I always believe anything is possible. USMC60
Speaking of "terms" just spent a few cups of coffee looking for the words "wide spread" , could somebody please explain that to me; often hear "nice wide spread ... so just what does that mean please? thank you
The OP is new to the hobby, so is it really wise to add to his admitted confusion by arguing the unnecessary? Larry is right, and at this point in time it would behoove the OP to stick with the accepted terms, at least until he becomes more familiar.
I assume this is in reference to doubling? If so, it would be describing the "spread" between the primary and secondary relief.
If I've understood you correctly, yes... Here... compare the "spread" on "LIBERTY" between WDDR-001 and WDDR-002: http://doubleddie.com/384301.html
Well now that makes it a lot more clear/understandable. Thank you I am going to take this opportunity to ask another question here if you all don't mind please ( just another perplexing item.) As an example: 1966 Washington quarter .... going to that year/mint it states 1966 DDR-001 below that in red it states FS-801(026.3)but no photo .... how in the world can a new person such as myself make heads or tails from that?? Have come across this numerous times. What is the best way to approach this??? When I cannot find something on the DDR or DDO I realize I just do not have something; but the law of averages I would think would dictate that after 300$ in quarters, 6 boxes of pennies I would come across something wouldn't you think? I am having a good time and enjoy every minute nonetheless. Basically am I approaching this in a manner that is working against me??? And yes I do take this rather more seriously than I should I guess lol. There is probably more than one other collector out there saying Gee wonder how he missed this lol thank You
If I've understood your question correctly, they're simply cross references, or two different ways of identifying the same variety (they are in the example provided anyway). As for finding varieties, it's really pure chance, so I wouldn't put much weight into expecting to find X in X boxes or number of coins. That said though, knowledge really is the the key here. All the references in the world can be meaningless if you don't know how to properly identify the different varieties. To try to give an example: if you searched through, say, four boxes of cents now, pulling anything you thought or even suspected may be a variety, but then set them aside to revisit a year or two down the road, you'll almost certainly discover something previously missed. Does this make sense?
O makes a whole lot of sense. Just given the next guy a fair chance is all lol. Here is an example of some of the things I must just et used to. Was/is a gift from CONECA as a membership bonus. Know darn good and well I have tossed a great number of these (or ones that look similar) into the return box. Sorta like arrow head hunting, I bet I have found several thousand of them over my life time, probably more; I have yet to find a whole one. It is the quest, not the reward. Better exercise though Thank you again.
BooksB4Coins You and Larry are both absolutely correct in old outdated terminology. I have a problem with you and other members trying to program new members to error coin collecting by insisting they used old terminology. This is not the past 50 years ago this is the present 2017. And Pluto is not a planet and Columbus is not the first one to discover America. In order to grow in your knowledge you have to be willing to accept change. And it is quite obvious you and others are not going to accept any changes that is your loss don't make it a new members loss.Just because in the past you were programmed and brainwashed into certain coin terminology. Stop trying to do it to new members. It's not fair to the new people coming into error coin collecting. They should have the opportunity to explore all changes and make their own decisions. It should be their choice to use either Greece filled or debris filled. Not yours or any other member.Unlike you and many others I believe someone new in error coin collecting, should be presented with what ever information is available. And let them decide what they wish to accept and believe. ((Not you)). I know both you and Larry are beyond help. But I am going to give the op the opportunity to check out my thread. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/debris-fill-die.292335/ And for the new guy I believe I've welcomed you before but if not welcome. BooksB4Coins AND ldhair You can't fight change it's all around you. USMC60 PS Unlike some I do not make comments like this is old and accepted terminology you should accept it. I always say you have a choice you decide here are your options.
Why should the hobby change to a term that you made up? There is no need. Everyone understands the term as is. That's all that's important. You are the one that should just stop with trying to confuse new folks to the hobby.
