One of the things I love so much about being an unfocused collector is that I never know what I need or want until I come across it. There isn't a list of things to look out for. If I find it interesting and attractive I buy it! This beauty was largely ignored at Agora. It came today (the delay was mine, I paid three days late). Antoninus Pius. A.D. 138-161. AE sestertius (32.22 mm, 21.99 g, 12 h). Rome mint, A.D. 140-144. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P COS III, laureate head right / OPI AVG, Ops seated left, long transverse scepter in right hand, drawing back drapery with left, flower under thrown; SC in exergue. RIC 612. aVF. Scarce reverse. Ex John Haer collection; Ex Beast Coins; Ex Davisson's.
Nice one, Ken. I have a denarius to match. Antoninus Pius, (138 - 161 A.D) AR Denarius O: ANTONINVS AVG PI - VS PP TR P COS III, laureate head right. R: OPI AVG; Ops seated left, holding scepter and resting her head on right hand. Rome Mint, 140-143 A.D. 3.43g 18mm RIC III 77 Plublished on Wildinds
I have always thought I was as unfocused as anyone and I have always wanted this one. I did not note it in that sale but was outbid on all but one lot. I paid the day of sale and have heard nothing but that is another thread. The reason I wanted this was the Ops reverse is only found on a very few Roman coins. I believe the Pius is the more scarce. The common Ops is below: Pertinax OPI DIVIN TRP COS II This denarius is Alexandria mint but the type was used at Rome as well in all five denominations. The Pius coin also comes with an anepigraphic reverse but the OP coin is sooooo much better IMO.
NICE QUARTER-DEN @Ken Dorney ... That one is nice and I like that hard to find Ops! I have a Tet... RI Antoninus Pius 138-161 BCE BI Tet Alexandria Egypt Dikaiosyne (JUSTICE) Scale
Yes, I totally understand! I can lose focus too, and it often results in acquiring some great coins! I just so happen to have an Antoninus Pius!
When I find a coin i like that falls outside of my area of focus I do the only logical thing, expand my area of focus.
A-Pius Sestertii, eh? Ummm, am I allowed to toss-in these two humble examples? man, I love these comfy ol' sestertii ... they are so awesome "in-hand"
Thats a fantastic coin Ken! Heres my unfocused Pius (actually 90% my AP coins were like that) Heres is my AP Ops. Gifted to me from the last Secret Santa.
I LOVE that Pius OPI post Ken! Terrific posts everyone !!! I'm surprised to see so many examples of the OPs reverse. As far as I know my only example would be this budget denarius of Pertinax.
