Hello again everyone. I sometimes see this on coins and was wondering is this a type of plating issue? Photo isn't great, but hope you can see real shiny around chin mouth eyes and to right of eyes.
As mentioned, nickels aren't plated. They can have improper mixtures like woody Lincolns, but my guess is wear(also mentioned before) removing toning so it looks more shiny.
It is a debris on the die that grows as coins are minted. The coin is to have a satin look not luster. As the debris add up the area gets larger. Rick
I thought this was some kind of annealing issue. I've seen plenty of this on coins out of brand new rolls of State quarters.
Tommy, As you search the roll in itself. You will see the so-called areas get better or worse. I usually search 10 rolls or more from a box. That really lets me know how the die is at that processing point. Rick
I have enjoyed the State Quarters for 2 years. I searched somewhere around 10,000 rolls and made a nice NGC set as well as adding many Top Pop coins to the set that is now rank #1 NGC only in the CS club. Rick
