I am making another trip to Guadalajara Mexico soon and would like to know if there are any coin shops or sites of interest you all might recommend.

In the past, I have tried to visit a couple coin shops listed in the phone book but they could not be found by phone or taxi.

Any ideas or should I stick to tequila?

Mexico has very few coin collectors. I'd be suprised if you did find a coin shop over there.

There are actually a couple B&M shops listed in the Guadalajara phone book. I'm going to try them again. If I get them on the phone then I will have a better chance to find a shop.

I see you are located in Laredo. I'm flying into Laredo & I'll be in Nuevo Laredo for a day of business before traveling to Guadalajara. I wasn't planning to shop for coins in Nuevo Laredo :) .

CT has some very freindly & knowledgeable people in the ranks.

CT has some very friendly & knowledgeable people in the ranks. At least one of our members lives in Guadalajara Mexico.

I have received a PM including detailed information about two coin shops in Guadalajara. I understand that one handles a larger stock & higher end coins. Assuming they are open when I'm available, then I will post if I buy something.

Not to discourage you, but I hope that Mexican coin dealers don't act like Mexican pharmacists. Before two of my aunts passed from breast cancer, they attempted to have relatives buy the steroid-based drugs in Mexico because they were cheaper. Since it is illegal to bring these drugs into the US, the pharmacists would sell the drugs and then call ahead to the border guards who would confiscate the drugs.

    How do you spell R-E-C-Y-C-L-E?

I'm going to be in Guadalajara later this year and was wondering if you could pass along the info on the 2 coin shops :)

    Thanks!!

I'm sorry about your aunts but to generalize this to "Mexican pharmacists" is just plain ignorant. Not all American health care providers are honest. We lose a lot of tax pay dollars to fraud every year and do you have any proof that they called ahead to the border guards? Maybe the border guards were just good at their jobs and caught your relatives doing something illegal.

Leaving Mexico, the Mexican border guards have no reason to search your car for contraband. It is the US border guards who's job is to stop you to ask if you have anything to declare and/or search your vehicle. So, when the Mexican authorities order you to pull over to tell you that if you are transporting drugs you'd better hand them over now, otherwise, they will let the US border guards know that you are transporting contraband. You figure it outedited !

And the Mexican authorities don't work with American authorities? Come on!!! Your previous statement is basically insinuating that all Mexican pharmacists are dishonest and then sort of lumping in Mexican coin dealers as well you seem to have some kind of bias against Mexicans in general. Are all Mexicans honest of course not but not all Americans are either. So don't generalize based on one incident.

You obviously have a problem with reading comprehension. I didn't "lump" coin dealers in with the pharmacists. I stated that I hoped they weren't like them.

When I was on South Padre Island for a tournament in 1999, my Mom and I drove to Brownsville to speak to US Customs officials. We had with us the empty bottles for the medicaton one of my aunts needed, and we asked if this was a banned pharmaceutical. We were told that it was, but it was common practice for the pharmacies to sell it and call ahead as I explained.

Are you some kind of part-time psychoanalytical coin collector? Where do you get the impression that I have a bias against Mexicans? I don't trust politicians, but that doesn't mean I have a bias toward everyone living in Washington, DC.

I'm beginning to dislike your holier-than-thou attitude, but I do know some nice people living in California, too!

If you send me your email address by PM, then I can send you business cards of the two Guadalajara shops. One of the shops is 2-blocks south of the Cathedral, Governor's Palace, & Plaza Tapatio. The other (larger) shop is located in Plaza Mexico.

It wouldn't matter is the coin dealers did contact the border agents. It isn't illegal to bring coins into the country.

Absolutely untrue. Coin collecting is very popular, with a large portion collecting 20th century issues starting with the Revolution. Introduction of bi-metal MS and Proof series has seen quite an uptick in collecting population, as well.

This thread is 6 years old. ;) I've read that collecting coins isn't unpopular in Mexico, Mexican coinage just doesn't generally gain large premiums because of large survival rates in large hoards.

Oh, shoot, didn't realize it was a resurrected thread. My mistake.

Collecting in Mexico has been gaining quite a bit of momentum in the recent years, but not a lot of disposable income means collecting is focused around more affordable material.

Coincidentally, right as this thread was resurrected, I'm in Mexico City, and will also be visiting Guadalajara. Hopefully I'll find some cool stuff while I'm here!

I've grabbed quite a few error coins on my trips to Guadalajara. Sorry that I never got back to this thread with photos. Here are a couple photos:
