Here is another pickup from the Spring ANA show in Orlando, also known as the least talked about coin show in history. :)

This coin has an unusual patina that caught my eye. The portrait and lettering have bluish deposits around them while the rest of the coin is very dark brown. The photo makes the fields look lighter than they really are and does not show off the blue very well. I will have to try again to get a better photo. Maybe more diffuse lighting will help?

    Marcus Aurelius
    A.D. 161-180 AE Sestertius 26.76 grams

Obverse: Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right.
Reverse: Concordia seated left, holding patera, left elbow resting on small statue of Spes; below chair, cornucopia.

Post your coins with unusual patinas!

Have wondered that also John. Perhaps most folks were off (elsewhere) on spring break?

Nice coin and I was there. :)

Hmmm, one man's unusual is another man's normal ... but sure, I'll make an attempt to add a few unusual patina examples!

I have a Gordian III sestertius with that toothpaste-color-blue patina over the entire surface. I also think it's black underneath:

This sestertius of Antoninus Pius has a mottled blue/green patina, probably a bit to thick although still good detail coming through. And another AP Sestertius with multicoloured patina. 5GdjYf9n6bNRJm8y3ZmXHK7fEoQ4FT (2).jpg 422 (700x366).jpg

Just got my first sestertius in the mail and I'm in love with this large coin. I'm going to have to get more.

As an aside, what's up with his eyeball?

Fantastic coin, Smojo ... I'm assuming that those blue/green crusties are nice and hard, eh? (very pretty patina => congrats)

    A very attractive coin!

It almost looks like the eye feature is actually a corrosion spot rather than something in the original dies. Does anyone else have a Roman coin with this style eye?
