My parents had a cleaning lady who stole small items each time she and her kid cleaned the house.

10 years later it was discovered the cleaning lady's kid had discovered hidden ammo cans full of silver.

Over 10 years they stole $56k. My parents were in denial and only discovered it after I caught her kid stealing a gold necklace.

Even after her admission my parents kept her working. Old age and stubbornness, the perfect victim for a con.

I don't really see an "angle" as much as I see an inability to control his environment, and subsequently lashing out as a result. His list of "suspects" is long, and if the thing happened as he says it does, chances are the true culprit is on that list.

As is a group of completely innocent people, who, if accused, will make his life even more miserable when they countersue. This isn't going to make it better for him.

He was reported to the local police department (who did nothing), but more importantly, he lost a brother for the rest of his life. 40 years later, we're still estranged. He knew how much time I poured over my collection; he's never apologized.

The police need a DA that is willing to run with the case. The DA needs someone that actually saw the person take the goods in order to file charges for theft. They might run with charges on someone that has the stolen goods but they usually don't wish to spend much time on it. They want bigger fish.

It can be cool if you can get the IRS in the middle of things. They can file charges for other reasons but are of little help in recovering the goods. I just did this on a 500K theft because there was no way to prove the theft.
Fair warning, don't bring the IRS into something unless you have your own house in order. Your own stuff will become part of the investigation.

That's, like, I could contemplate being so mad at someone I might shave their skin off with a cheese grater until I had my satisfaction, but I'm not so sure I could ever get angry enough to sic the IRS on someone. :p

    Starving dogs, they are.
