I'm telling you, the next worst thing to browsing coins while drunk is browsing coins while half asleep. So in my last bout of insomnia, I got up in the middle of the night and started my dangerous trek. I knew how small Indian Fanams are but my brain couldn't process anything logical at the time. The only thing I knew was, next morning when I woke up I was like "what just happened?" Well at least they're pretty to look at. Rajahs of Cochin: Anonymous Gold "Vira Raya" fanam. Later type o: Stylized boar standing right r: Stylized lion (sardula) standing right, crescent above. Additional dot above lion's head. 1600-1750 0.39 gm. 9 mm. MNI 1129 var MYSORE, Krishna Raja Wodeyar (1799-1868): Gold "Kanthirava" fanam, late degenerate style o: Narasimha (Lion-faced Vishnu) seated facing, holding a chakra in each upper hand. r: Degenerate legend 1799-1868 0.32 gm. 7 mm. MNI 1029 and is it just me or does that look like a duck instead of a lion?
I suspect most fanums are sold to people who want a gold coin and are unclear on just how small they are. So far I have avoided getting one but I know I could not resist one with Steve and a duck.
hey nice IR...one of these is actually on my sober want list! these are nice looking little coins. i'll post one of of my AE indian lions (looks like a pokemon character as some have pointed out) from about the same time period as your second coin. nice and thick...
Good thing they're cheap! Sri Lankan Fanam, Viraraya Design, 0.36 g, 7.5 mm, Obv : Lion to the right and crescent above, Rev : Viraraya boar type design. (Herrli1.21.01)
I bought one deliberately and had a loop soldered on for my daughter's mother-in-law to use on a chain as a neckless (she's from India). Moderately cheap and quite unique.
Wow, nice thread ... Anyway => I buy 90% of my coins when I'm hammered ... the other 10% tend to be boring and predictable Yah, apparently Mr. Hyde has way better coin-taste than Dr. Jekyll!! => icerain => congrats on adding those semi-blurry beer-goggle coins!! I actually really like 'em (sadly, I haven't been drunk enough to pull the trigger on one of those types yet!!)
