This was the first half dollar produced with a closed collar, at which time the edge device also transitioned from the lettered edge used previously to a new reeded edge. Per Coinfacts approx. 5000 coins were minted and an estimated 1000 examples survive. How would you grade my example?
I cannot spot any specific weakness in details to drop it to a 35. I would grade it a solid XF-40. James
I, too, like the coin and the eye appeal, but comparing it to the PCGS photograde, I'd have to say VF-25, maybe 30 on a really good day. For specific weaknesses, look at the sharpness of the drapery and the hair, and on the reverse, the eagle's head and wing tips.
Y'all are guessing really high. No way is this anywhere near a 40 - not a hint of luster, and way too much wear. It is a very attractive coin, even a hint of rainbow toning on the obverse, but that is a very high guess. I'm more in the VF-20 range.
