How Would You Grade This 1839-O Half Dollar

It is already slabbed by ANACS. I've had it since 1990 or 1991 so it's an early ANACS slab?

Please let me know how you would grade this.

It is a nice example with plenty of die breaks. The slab is unfortunately a bit scratched. The finger prints one can see are on the coin, but mostly visible only in sunlight.

I am at AU53. Wonderful half Eduard, I have always wanted one, but they are too far out of my price range.

Nice coin. I'll go with 53.

 

You can see visible wear on the nose of Liberty and the hair folds above her ear. I reserve AU-58 for coins that I have to put under a glass or study to find faint wear points. I also prefer near full mint bloom. I will go with AU-55.
This is pretty much the marquee coin when it comes to Reeded Edge date/mints. I love the die cracks. I don't have a 39-O but I do have several Reeded Edge Halves and they are a favorite of mine. Hard to think of any other coin that so clearly exposes the trials and tribulations of switching to steam powered presses. James

I’m at an AU-53 but I do have concerns about those fingerprints.

Interesting comments - of course you are right about the difficulties with the new presses and broken dies. This coin has many breaks on both obverse and reverse which my pictures don't show well.
