Wow...it's not just my FUN 2026 Dream Coin that got away (actually, never showed up )....the prices for the OGH 3.0 and OGH 3.1 coins like Double Eagles have just gone NUTS even for coins that are basically bullion. Figure 15-20%. That's Big $$$ when you are talking $4,500 gold. Are you guys seeing it in the types of coins you look at and/or buy/sell ?
Not CAC'ed, but I've done well buying common coins (clad proofs, etc.) in OGH's and flipping them to holder collectors. Rattlers are crazy too. Go check out what a common Eisenhower Dollar in a rattler goes for! If anyone's wondering this is an OGH (Old Green Holder)
The older holders continue to see strong premiums. The small white Anacs holders have exploded in the last year or so. I've watched common date low mint state Morgans bringing $130+ when a new PCGS/NGC holder in the same grade would be closer to $100. And other common coins that are hard to find in those slabs (like Silver Eagles) are at even larger premiums.
Buying the holder has been happening for a while now but it seems to have accelerated post 2020. I have noticed a bunch of item skyrocket: gold cac common coins, 108 rattlers (and then 109 rattlers), NGC 1.0 and 2.0/2.1, Anacs small white holders are just a few examples of the top of my head.
I figured the 110 rattler was next and tried finding some cheaper examples last year. I only was able to buy one. I did see a 110 rattler bring $160 yesterday on eBay for a common date Franklin with a CAC sticker (probably a $40-$50 coin max). The sticker probably helped but it is still a sign of a premium.
What are these "rattlers" with numbers ? And I assume the "rattlers" are pre-OGH holders that the coin moved around in ?
This is a rattler (from a current GC auction). The cert numbers starting with "108" were the first slabbed by PCGS. The coin below is one of the first 2,000 slabbed.
Thanks, DDDDD. Did you see where the owner of the 1933 DE -- EliteCollection on some forums -- bought some nondescript coin that was I believe one of the first 10 coins graded by PCGS ? I believe it was mid 5-figures....I think the coin had 1% of the value he paid, the rest was in being that early a graded coin by PCGS.
And fun fact for anyone who doesn't know. The "Rattlers" numbers started about where the David Hall Flips ended. Check out the number in the bottom right corner. Not my coin:

I had the same thought about 3 months ago and only found 1 I was willing to pay the price on. $160 for this. Being a coin guy, and not a holder guy, I feel like I overpaid. But it was probably a decent deal considering the direction prices are going for older holders.
That looks like a solid coin and with prices going up, it's a decent price. Here is the sale I mentioned from yesterday:
Dang about 5 to 6 years ago the local shop had a box full of rattlers (don't know the number) wish I had bought them now. Never have been a holder collector, but this will be good to know for next visit to local shop.
So, curious. What is this all about? Nobody in the current world of professional graders can see straight? Everything went down hill after the OGH? Or people just being people and need to play in the pool of the Next Thing. I'm starting to think it was a good thing I spent so much time on Teletrade. Back in the day. I need to go inventory what I have buried in bottom of the pile. I know there's some small ANACS holders in there. Rick L.
It is a combination of wanting the older holders for nostalgia, less of the older holders being around, and the belief they are more conservatively graded (some are and some are not though).
Actually, it was a 1904 MS-63 Double Eagle that had a Gold CAC, so maybe an MS-65. So a fairly valuable numismatic coin relative to the underlying gold content. But even an MS-65 equivalent, at that time, with a nice premium because of the uniqueness of the Gold CAC + Rattler, with gold at $3,400 an ounce....it's like he paid about $35,000 or thereabouts for the holder if you assume a coin that would normally sell for about $3,500 sells for triple that given (Gold) CAC and old (Rattler) holder. Net-Net....we're not seeing the premium in those other sales you guys cite. I guess that's because the Big Money Guys had specific interest in the coin, too.
