It’s an 1822 Matron Head Large Cent. Just over 2 million were minted. It’s worn and not in the best of shape but this poor lady has been through a lot.

Y’know, I wonder if 19th century collectors would have rejected that coin because of the error. I don’t think error coins were as appreciated back then? Nor might this have gotten recognized as an error at the time, instead of just as some messed-up cent. But it doesn’t seem to have stopped shopkeepers from accepting it in commerce, judging by the amount of wear it got. They were probably too hard up for small change in circulation to give it much thought or care.
