I bought this is 2017 for a low modest price. It’s in nice shape and it’s dated 1783. It’s a 1 Silver Real from Mexico. A small piece of the coin is broken off but I’m fine with that. Graded and slabbed by NGC and certified as Genuine.
Yes that's the first thing I noticed That coin was minted a few years before my detected find Half Reale
I should have kept the few 8 reals that I picked years ago but they were bringing good money and people were Snapping them up...3x the money was hard to pass on.
Aside from the rim breakage, that's really not too bad looking for an El Cazador piece. The details on the portrait and the darker grey toning are nice. Sal's 2R is rather more typical looking for the coins from this wreck. It is my understanding that 4-reales pieces are a scarcer denomination in general.
Many of my Detecting acquaintances here in NYC have detected Reales of different denominations. One guy found two 1 Reales in Pelham Bay Park.
That shipwreck was highly significant in terms of the waves it created historically, politically, geographically, and economically in the USA -- as well as sending ripples of impact all the way across 'The Pond' in Spain and France. I have an entombed 8R. It is 1783 MO.
