Good morning, I bought this coin attributed as this: Baldwin III, King of Jerusalem (r. 1143-1163) Silver Denier – Cross/Tower of David However, in all my research , it looks more like an Italy denaro 1272-1339 from Genoa. Would you say that is correct? I fear it is. That means I grossly overpaid. I bought it from Harlan Berk, so I assumed they would know. Oh, well. I guess we all make mistakes.
I know nothing about these, but it sure looks like this one from Conrad, King, Genoa, on Numista: Denier (Class D) - Republic of Genoa (1139-1797) – Numista. Can you get your money back?
Maybe. I just hate asking! I paid $200 for it, which would have been a good deal. This coin though is probably only worth $50 at the most. I am not loosing a whole lot, it is mostly just disappointing. I will probably bring it up the next time I am there and see what they can do. They have always treated me very well there.
Give the ancient coin members time to look at this one. I certainly don’t have a clue. Maybe @Bing can help.
Pretty nice example! But you are correct about it not being Baldwin III. It is Conrad III. And the mint is indeed Genoa as you surmised. And as @Neal stated above. Obverse: Tower side. Can you return it? If not, then... well... at least it IS a nice coin, even if you did end up overpaying. And we've certainly all done that a time or two.
I don't know if I can return it. I'll mention that it was misattributed the next time I'm there. I am not too concerned though. Yes, I overpaid, but I have also gotten some really good deals that wash this out. The silly thing for me was that after researching online for a while, I used my google app on the phone to scan it and it instantly showed me exactly what it was. I just wish now that I had done that at the coin shop!
