New eBay policy on Coins sold for more than $500?

eBay is rampant with photoshopped coin illustrations. Tenth ounce Gold American Eagles in a slab altered to make the coin look the size of a one ounce coin etc. If they can't even police obvious photo doctoring on the site, what's the point in physically inspecting anything?

 

It's like most bureaucratic decisions: attempt to solve an issue but avoid some of the easy solutions. eBay had an employee that would review listings a decade or more ago (with the help of collectors who would report fakes) and that would be a simple first step to remove a large number of the obvious problematic listings. This authentication program is a good idea but it would work better if it was targeted to a smaller group of items where a picture is not enough to verify the coin.

 

Yes lots should not be eligible but for some reason the system is not recognizing that as I saw someone on the PCGS forum who also had a lot of junk Kennedy Halfs go to the authenticator and then get the same reply of it not qualifying for the program. Maybe sellers need to select an option on their listing to indicate something is a lot but plenty of listings could have carried over from before the program started and it's probably not an obvious setting (where the seller clearly sees they need to choose lot or single coin).

 

Just an update, my 1903 PL morgan has been "authenticated" and is now on it's way to me. So far other then doubled shipping time (1st to the "authenticator" and then from them to me) there have been no issues or "charges" of course the charges might be held against the seller but at this time I have no way of knowing that..

Oh now that's interesting. Look at the returns section "This item is final sale and cannot be returned". So if the seller doesn't offer returns and it passes eBay's authenticity check, then it cannot be returned even under the eBay Money Back Guarantee.

if I am not mistaken, eBay still allows anyone 3 days upon receipt to initiate a return whether or not the seller accepts returns or not. I believe prior to the new policy it was 14 days rather than 3. But that wasn't what I am pointing out, the coin is a really BAD counterfeit, and I suspect the dealer doesn't even know it yet. I looked at his other stuff and didn't even see another silver dollar for sale, all small denominations. So.................since the auction price exceeds the $500 threshold, eBay is going to send it for authentication. And they are going to send it back to the seller with the bad news, and eBay automatically refunds buyer.

Such obvious garbage. Too bad we can't track it and see what happens. Buyer probably thinks they're getting an MS for G4 price. 23 bids. You just can't help these people.

Closer examination of the photo makes it appear like somebody used a fine point sharpie to outline the profile and the eye.

 

I finally got my package in the mail today. As mentioned, eBay could not authenticate the coins because they were listed "in the wrong category." They just added time to the coins reaching me. I am not impressed. So what if they were in the wrong category?! Are they real? Do they have experts that only deal in certain categories? The coins I received appear to be fine.

 

I have at least a partial answer as to "who" authenticates ebays coins.

Not sure of the exact acronym but the business name on/for that address is Collectors Universe (the parent company of PCGS and PSA)
so that answers who is authenticating coins for ebay. I suppose they are "acceptable" lol
