[Game] World Coins Time Machine… Counting Backward by Year! (Plus Prize Coin)

Very interesting! It seems that there was a lot of back and forth with the Ottomans laying siege to Vienna up to the last one in July 14 to September 12, 1683.

My last dated coin is a thaler, 1526, so I can add it to our effort when we reach that point in our backwards trip through time.

Was this the first Thaler?

 

No, this is the first thaler-size coin, minted in 1486 and extremely rare. Not my coin, by the way....

I think we skipped a few years but now we should be around 1524, and I got this one new:

 

In which case, this Henry VIII first coinage penny struck under Bp. Thomas Wolsey at the ecclesiastical mint at Durham should tick the box for 1523. That was the year he was given the bishopric which he took over from Thomas Ruthall, but famously never bothered to visit the city. He gave up the post in 1529.

This is a deceptively difficult coin to get in any condition and was happy to get it at a Timelines sale in 2015. Buying was a no-brainer, as the only contender in the market was likely to be the Walters coin, if and when it appeared. When it surfaced in Stewartby's collection and comparing both side by side, I was relieved to be able to chase other targets because the surfaces on mine have minimal wear, though the other one has a full flan and is better struck. Identified by the spur rowel initial mark, I can't make up my mind if the reverse mark is a blundered spur rowel, or a messy overcut of a star. If recut, then it would be formerly be a radiant star marked reverse with TD in place of the DW. Stewartby's coin had a different reverse die.Whatever, it should be fairly early in his tenure. I only know of half a dozen examples in all grades. The weight is 0.69g, or 0.07g below the terms of indenture, but doesn't show any sign of clipping. Just the regular irregularity. Sorry. For the Stewartby coin, it is 561 in his book plates.
