Wife of Galerius? Even with the light porosity on this one I liked it. The flip says SR 3730 AD 305-311 I weighed it 7.3g, 25.4mm Give me a few, like the morning to ID it, but, please post any that emulate it. It's a little more chocolate in hand.
Neat little coin. I'm pretty sure I had one of her in my old novice 2007-2008 Roman collection, but if so, it seems the pics of it are gone now.
This is the first of her that I have heard in all my years here, also it's a late example of a sestertius hefty in hand, thin in the fingers.
Yes, she was his 2nd wife. She was also a daughter of Diocletian. GALERIA VALERIA - FOLLIS - VENUS VICTRIX. Mint: Cyzicus. 308-309 AD. Obv: GAL VAL - ERIA AVG Diademed bust of the empress, right, wearing stephane. Rev: VENERI V - ICTRICI / Δ / ex: MKV. Venus standing left, apple in right hand, drawing drapery from shoulder with left hand. Weight: 5.9 g. Diameter: 24 mm. Attrib.: RIC VI 46
I meant to say reminds me of a Sestertius. A little smaller in diameter and a couple grams lighter. Could be a follis like Philologus above. I haven't had the time to look it up.
Now that you mention it, follis does seem more likely, at that diameter. But it’s still significantly bigger than my old Æ3 was.
Closest I can get is RIC Vl 46 The hair is not the same or the drapery on the bust. Galeria Valeria AE Follis. Struck circa 308-309 AD. GAL VAL-ERIA AVG, diademed and draped bust right / VENERI V-ICTRICI, Venus standing left, holding up apple in right hand and raising drapery over shoulder with left, &Delta in left field. Mintmark MKV. Sear 14597.
All these Galeria Valeria coins are folles.
