How do you keep records of your coin collection?

I actually have Excel on my main computer. I was just asking the question to get a second copy for my laptop. I have been using Excel for years. I was a financial system analyst for about thirty years.

 

How does it display ? Do you simply view the information in excel or ? I have a lot of free time and many hobbies. Would it be possible for you to send me a copy of your sheet. Delete all entries except a few coins , altering some values. If you're not interested , I open the offer to anyone interested. I simply want to work on a nice user interface. To do so , I kind of need a proper data set. I can do this arbitrarily online, but I think it would be more fun this way

 

There is also OpenOffice which has all the MS stuff like spreadsheets, etc. Operates the same way and is free.

 

That's exactly what I use. It works fine for me. I also have a picture file in my computer for every coin I have.

as for the actual question. I use my memory and like the to page through the binders and albums every weekend or so.

 

Using something doesn't mean I trust it.

 

For those who mentioned having pictures of your coins as well. What do you do to get pictures for your collection? Do you use a cell phone and take pictures of each one individually, or do you use a flatbed scanner and scan batches then crop them out? I'm interested in hearing what many of you do.

Personally I do the flatbed scanner method. However recently I wrote a program to make the cropping process so much easier...

Wish I wrote the program much earlier because it would have saved me HOURS of tedious cropping and saving.... Live and learn!

 

I was initialy asking because I wanted to build a coin cataloging program like I have for my coins and artifacts.

 

My current project is a past auction sales browser thing thang. I'm not quite sure all the functions it should have.

 

Nearly my entire collection is slabbed, so I use the TPG pics for most of them. Many were purchased at auction, so the auction houses frequently take good pics. And if neither are available, I'll take pics with my camera.

Cell phone pics generally are OK, but a camera with a good macro lens is better. Never use a scanner.
