As promised in another thread, here’s the GTG. This beauty is one of the coins I recently added to my Bustie set: …it’s in a newer PCGS holder.
That is a fantastic coin. I don't see any friction in the fields, but I see what I'd interpret as wear on her breasts and the curls above her ear. This is one that the old timers would grade AU (nowadays AU-58+) - but I could also see them forgive a bit of "cabinet friction" since there is no wear in the fields, and jump to MS-64. In the poll, I voted AU-58+ because that is how *I* would grade it based on the pictures. No idea what the slab says, lol.
I'm going to guess they said AU-58+ (maybe I'm just being influenced by the latest Cabbage Coins podcast). Doesn't really matter what the number on the slab is though, it's a beautiful coin.
Very nice! I see wear on the photos and went with AU 58 (the plus is likely deserved but is hard to earn, so I did not add that to my guess).
I am going with MS64 on this one, and that's just because the standards have changed at PCGS. The luster is too strong IMO to be labeled as a 58. Beautiful coin Mic!
It’s a bust half dollar… the series is known for notoriously weak strikes as they were produced before steam presses were introduced in 1836. Someone showed me an 1809 half dollar in a PCGS XF40 holder at the ANA show, it sure was a mid-AU coin but got incorrectly downgraded due to strike issues.
Hard to say what somebody else gave it, depending on whether they'd had their coffee quota or not, but to me it looks MS-64.
Congratulations, well done everyone! Roughly 40% votes for AU58 or plus, more than 50% for MS63/64 and a single vote for MS62. It is an MS63+ but I don’t think anybody can tell us what’s missing for an MS64.
I stepped up because of the lack of contact normally seen on a 63, Just my opinion when you decide too go with an MS grade.
Before scrolling down to see the answer, I voted MS63 (no plus). Lovely coin. I have never had a Mint State Bust half. My best to date was an AU53.
I think the « best » grades for early silver coins are VF35 and AU53. As long as they have original surfaces, you get the most bang for the buck when buying coins in those grades.
