Can you tell that this coin photo was AI generated?

Okay technically it isn't fully AI-generated, but it was upscaled & generated based on a real coin listed in a 1988 Stack's Auction Catalog. [Lot #995]

I guess I can tell that it’s not an image taken directly of a coin. There’s no depth or character. Hard to describe. It still feels like an image of a printed image.

 

I would have said something looks a little off somehow, but I don't think I'd have immediately concluded AI was involved. Like KBBPLL said, it looks like it's a picture of a picture.

 

I would have to spend some time looking at it to be suspicious. Some of the lettering on the reverse is flawed, most notably the second "A" in "AMERICA". If you posted it in a casual thread, I probably wouldn't have guessed.

I was a little worried about posting this because I didn't want people thinking I'm testing out my own potential counterfeits

 

I don't think AI is really ready for it - maybe if someone had good engineering skills. It is real interesting what it does to pictures. I did this with my 1820 MS64+ coin. I dropped the dealers picture in to see what it would do - the chatgpt coin has too much red, pcgs picture just sucks to all get out, the dealer pictures does hint at this lustery beauty. So chatgpt seemed to make the cracks a little thinner in my opinion and it took it from BN to what could possible be RB. Just a fun little test.
