One of my U.S collecting interests is putting together year sets. I love the history and the fact of seeing together the coins that were struck in the a given year. There is no gold in my sets (cannot afford it). Also, some of the major year rarities are missing (no 1794 dollar, or 1796 half, for example!) Still, Year-Sets are fun and very historical. In this particular set the large cent could be in better shape, but it's and interesting variety (3-errors variety), and the 1801 Half Dime is missing (scarce!) I do include the Dime, the Half, and the 1801 dollar.
Nice coin and great part of history! I found an 1801 Large Cent metal detecting. Not in great shape either.
Nice year set. I like it as is and no need to add gold. You also made me realize that by coincidence I have a 1806 half cent, quarter and half dollar in my type set. All I need is a large cent(currently 1803 AU coin in the type set). Luckily no dimes or half dimes made that year.
I think it took about 8 years. The first was the dollar for which I paid $650 at a Bowers auction in 1987. The last addition was the 1801 cent which cost $320 which was disproportionately high.
Mark, looks like you are almost there with a year set 1806. That would be a good year since with the 4 coins, you have the set. You don't need an AU 1806 cent, at least in my opinion, look at my 1801 cent.

Love the idea of year type sets. Great way to learn about the various designs, denominations, varieties, etc. of U.S. coins since 1793. To do this, a lot of money, time and, as you have realized, sacrificing quality or inclusion of some types due to rarity and/or cost is required. Nice job on the 1801 set. Because I'm a cheap bastard, I've decided to take this idea to the virtually/fantasy realm. Slowly putting together fantasy year type sets. For instance, here's the 1801 set - Large Cent, Half Dime, Dime, Half Dollar and Dollar. Yes, these are not my pictures of not my coins - I've borrowed them from the internet for educational & fair use purposes!
Yeah - I know where there is a nice AU 1806 large cent but out of my price range. Besides the half cent is VF, quarter is VF and the half dollar is XF. So if I run into a nice VF I will probably pick it up for the fun of it.
Here is an 1801 half dime. This one is graded EF-45. It should be an AU-50, but it's a late die state with the entire obverse cracked in half. I have thought about what you are doing. I have parts of year sets which I have assembled simply because I was interested in the piece parts, like a date set of cents or Bust Dollars. Still the only year set I did finish was the 1795 set. I should post that on this site.
